Marge Sherwood

Anthony Minghella’s 1999 rendition of The Talented Mr. Ripley is inhabited by characters possessing a certain elegance, tinged with desperation, in the case of the titular Tom Ripley, or deployed with effortless inbred certainty by Dickie Greenleaf and Marge Sherwood. The latter, played by a pre-Goop Gwyneth Paltrow, offers a figure brimming with confidence, intelligence, and independence, qualities that designers Sungeun Um and Soonyoung Kim took as literal inspiration for their line of handbags. Launched in 2016, Marge Sherwood is characterized by a subdued approach to silhouette and branding, relying on simple visual motifs in place of overt signifiers—namely, rounded corners and gently curved cut-out gradation at foldover details. Ranging from handbags fabricated in a tasteful gamut of embossed and buffed leathers to minimal leather-trimmed canvas shopping totes and backpacks, Marge Sherwood proposes a restrained delicacy, uncontrived and fully complementary to the contemporary embrace of sartorial dressing.
