In 1792, Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars was a pioneer in french botanical history. During the french revolution, he was exiled to Madagascar, Reunion and the Mauritius islands where he discovered a vast array of plant specimens. Ten years later and bearing a collection of over 2000 plants Louis Marie was finally able to return to France where he was elected a member of the prestigious Académie des Sciences. 200 hundred years later, Marie du Petit Thouars as a young girl grew up in Belgium making candles and experimenting with scents in her mother's green house. With the creation of Maison Louis Marie, she has built upon the rich botanical history of her family with luxury candles that focus on illustrious scents imbued with unique floral fragrances.
What's your favorite environment to work in?
My new office is my favorite place to work! It’s mostly all white which helps keep me calm and focused. I never get bored of white – it’s my favorite color! I also have a couch that I’m able to relax and drink tea and research things. It’s almost like a mini home.
Do you have any personal habits in the studio you'd like to share?
Well I am a Virgo so I am extremely organized. So much so I still do the books for the company - so when I first arrive in the morning I run the books, check the cash flow and the numbers. The act of doing that calms me down surprisingly and helps me be able to move on to the creative things for the rest of the day. I also work together with my husband and we always have lunch together.
Did you think you would be doing this when you were younger?
Probably not but I look back on so many things in life and see how impossible it is to be able to have any idea of how your life would evolve.
Where or how does nature fit into your life?
I am lucky to have a nice garden at home, which I get to wake up to every morning. Summer has arrived so it’s a wonderful time for our garden with everything blooming!
What do you look forward to in the next year?
Just living! Learning more and watching our son grow.
What was high school like for you?
I was not the happiest camper in high school. I remember always looking ahead and counting the days until I was out of there.
When was the most recent time you felt "moved" by something? An event, a shadow…?
So there are moments with my 22 month year old that are constantly moving me. The other day he just looked at me and said “mommy” and then hugged me for like a minute.
