Creating intricate and quirky womenswear RTW pieces, the Sandy Liang girl is a flirtatious embodiment of New York City. A recent graduate of Parsons School of Design, Sandy creates fun and feminine garments with mature and gritty features. Her debut collection for Spring Summer '15 features show-stoppers like the Black Floral Delancey Jacket—a structural leather biker jacket complete with made-you-look details like tiny embroidered daisies all over. Assembly's Greg Armas chatted with Sandy about tattoos, Top Gear, and grade school must haves (ahm...Platform Sketchers).
Greg Armas: What are you most excited about right now in your life?
Sandy Liang: for Spring to come. designing SS16. I’ve been trying to be more present in the moment, so just being more aware of everything around me in the present.
GA: Are there any sentimental jewelry, articles, (tattoo's?) you wear regularly?
SL: I have several tiny tattoos. I have a little line drawing of my dog, little flowers, and other small things that have been spur of the moment decisions. I wear my aquamarine ring every day. I got it for my 16th birthday from my dad. I also wear gold hoops from Adorned on my ears and tiny ones on my tragus.
GA: Are you close with your family?
SL: I’m pretty close to my brother and dad. I would love to see my family more often but we are usually off doing our own thing. We all live separately and have our own schedules. On Sundays, I’ll go to my brother’s place with my dog. We watch Netflix and eat omelettes while hungover.
GA: What was your first memorable outfit or look?
SL: I think I was in the second grade when I really wanted these pearlescent platform Sketchers. I wanted them so badly, but my mom wouldn’t get them for me. I still get excited thinking about them.
GA: Is your horoscope typically true for you?
SL: I’m a true Gemini. I’m incredibly indecisive. I can be so positive and excited one moment and then totally devastated the next. I get bored all the time. I can’t even enjoy vacations correctly because I’m fixated on work and what the next thing is. I don’t know how to relax.
GA: Do you have a favorite season and why?
SL: Summer. I like the sun. I like gardening. I like seeing my dog playing in the grass.
GA: Any feelings on reggae?
SL: It’s good when I’m driving with friends in the car and it’s sunny out.
GA: What are some of your favorite smells?
SL: Santal 33 from Le Labo. When guys don’t wear cologne but you can smell their deodorant. My dad’s intense Cartier cologne. The humid hot sticky smell of Hong Kong. Bread baking.
GA: Which parts of life do you find most challenging?
SL: I’ve accepted that every day is a challenge, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Just deal with things as they come. Everything will always be resolved.
GA: What do your clothes mean to you?
SL: To an extent my outfit will dictate how I will feel about myself that day. If I’m not comfortable in what I’m wearing, I can’t relax.
GA: Do you like to make your own food? ... favorites?
SL: I’ve been into avocados lately. I’m always into apples— pink lady apples from whole foods. I’m not very good at cooking. I also live near a ton of restaurants. But I’m a big fan of cooking shows— Nigella Lawson and Ina Garten.
GA: Anything you want to confess?
SL: I just found out that Jeremy Clarkson got kicked off of Top Gear. It’s very saddening. I feel like someone just broke up with me.
GA: what's up with shoes?
SL: Shoes are awesome. A big fan of shoes. I’ve always loved cap-toed shoes. I wish I could wear heels more often but I walk everywhere.
GA: What inspires you to be creative?
SL: My environment. The idea of making new things. The idea of making things that other people connect to and understand. The next thing, always the next thing. Running my own business and wanting it to be successful but still true to my attitude and beliefs.
GA: Dream vacation.. where are you and what are you doing?
SL: I’m in a house with my close friends. We are drinking outside because it’s warm. We are listening to music, whatever they prefer. My dog is running around. There’s no wifi.
